Social Justice Trends in New Media: How New Civil Rights Movements Take Shape
What takes places after the hashtag?  When you post your support in a comment or a 10 second video, does the intended impact have a lasting effect?

Media has played a major role in the shaping of civil rights movements in the 21st century. Beginning in the 1960s, peaceful demonstrations harnessed the power of media to change perceptions, raise awareness, and offer a call to action for the nation.

As new media platforms are created, civil rights issues have gotten attention much faster than ever before. But the challenge for supporters to stay connected to a cause once its no longer a "trending" topic has increased.

In this webinar, we explored civil rights trends and how they have taken shape in the 21st century using new a media lens. Sharon Rice, director of community relations with Generocity.org was joined by speakers Bryan Mercer and Rebekah Phillips, Co-Executive Directors of the Media Mobilizing Project, in examining the role media played in advancing the initial civil rights movement, how new media platforms have helped to shape current civil rights movements, and how supporters can join the conversation and not get lost in the trends.
