Philanthropic Advisor, The Philanthropic Initiative (TBF)

Position Summary:


TPI Philanthropic Advisors serve as a member of TPI’s professional staff, focusing primarily on programmatic and strategic planning work for TPI clients. They work collaboratively as members of teams supporting specific client engagements in designing, developing and evaluating philanthropic programs; supporting client relationships; and researching philanthropic issues. Philanthropic advisors also support TPI business development, field-building projects, and marketing activities; assist with research for business development proposals and related efforts; and help build and maintain client relationships. They may assume primary project management responsibility for selected projects and clients. The role may include field-building and other work involving international philanthropy, in connection with TPI’s Center for Global Philanthropy.

 

Essential Functions:

 

  • Research/Writing/Program Design, including research on social issues, best practices, and model approaches to key issues; community needs assessments; identifying and presenting funding opportunities, including ideas for programmatic initiatives; benchmarking and design of governance policies and practices; and preparing briefing papers and other deliverables for clients.
  • Client Support/Consulting, which may include management of grants programs, international philanthropy, scholarship and college success programs, and other initiatives supported by TPI clients; conducting due diligence review of funding requests; assisting in tracking/evaluation of funded projects; logistical and other support for client meetings; project management and facilitation; and conducting site visits with or on behalf of clients. 
  • Strategic Planning and Facilitation, including interviews with key stakeholders; design and implementation of surveys of key stakeholders and grant recipients; and preparation for and facilitation of planning sessions/retreats with clients. 
  • Program Design, Management and Evaluation, including design of Requests for Proposals, proposal guidelines and application materials, or other materials; research to identify funding opportunities; proposal review, due diligence, analysis and recommendations; training and facilitation of proposal review committees; negotiation of grant agreements and strategic partnerships; ongoing communications and support to grant recipients and partner organizations; and monitoring and evaluation.
  • Business Development, including networking, research to identify prospective clients, development of proposals, relationship-building and related efforts.
  • Thought Leadership and Field-Building Projects, including research, writing, and development of reports, blogs, articles, workshop materials, and presentations focusing on efforts to promote effective philanthropy. This work will likely include event planning and other initiatives in international philanthropy led by TPI’s Center for Global Philanthropy.

Qualifications

Preparation, Knowledge, Previous Experience:

  • A bachelor’s degree is required and an advanced degree in a relevant field is highly preferred; 
  • A minimum of 5-6 years of experience in a professional setting;
  • Experience in more than one sector, including public policy experience, is highly preferred. Although previous professional experience in philanthropy is not required, a previous relationship with philanthropy as consultant, grantee, funder or advisor is helpful; 
  • Experience with and knowledge of international development is preferred; and
  • Experience in or exposure to strategic planning and facilitation.

 Skills, Abilities, Competencies:

  • Exceptional analytical and problem-solving skills and ability to translate analyses into insights;
  • Strong organizational and project management skills;
  • Proficiency in Excel, PowerPoint, and other technology tools and platforms;
  • Experience with social issues research, policy analysis, and program design, implementation and evaluation; 
  • Interest and experience in one or more social issues of interest to TPI clients;
  • Excellent client relations, writing, interpersonal and communication skills;
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks simultaneously;
  • Collegial approach to work;
  • Ability to travel; and
  • Good sense of humor and willingness to be flexible.

 
Working Conditions & Physical Demands

  • Ability to sit for long periods of time;
  • Ability to use a keyboard for extended periods of time; and 
  • Ability to lift and carry up to 25 pounds, occasionally.
