Immerse yourself in a comprehensive learning experience, and fuel your passion for grantmaking and private philanthropy. Faculty members and guest speakers from across the philanthropic community help you to learn how to give more wisely. Explore a variety of funding approaches through presentations, discussions, graded assignments, and problem-solving exercises for groups and individuals. If you are an independent philanthropist, a member of philanthropic family, or a professional grantmaker with just a few years of experience in grantmaking, this intensive is designed for you. Professional fundraisers are not eligible for this course.
July 13 - July 17, 2015

This advanced seminar is only open to funders with five or more years of experience as grantmakers, or to alumni of past NYU mini-intensives, or recipients of the Certificate in Grantmaking and Foundations. Each time the course is offered, the content is updated based on recommendations of the larger philanthropy field. Previous sessions have focused on the many meanings of "impact philanthropy", emerging models of grantmaker-grantee relations, methodologies to address systemic societal issues, social entrepreneurship, and more.

These courses are coordinated by Richard Marker, an internationally known thought leader in the grantmaking and philanthropy field. He will be joined by several highly respected and prominent philanthropy experts.

Nonprofit organizations succeed or fail depending on how well they are managed. Good management must exist at all levels. Whether you supervise one person or 100, you need to know the tested principles of effective management. This course addresses the role of the manager as leader, coach, motivator, strategist, and tactician. It shows how to get the most from every employee and how to identify and manage your top performers. Topics include hiring the best people, managing boards, and managing yourself.

Online and mobile technologies are changing the global cause-funding ecosystem and are providing opportunities for grantmakers, nonprofits, and others to engage more effectively and to increase their impact. This interactive course explores examples that illustrate the necessity of embracing technology, the challenges that organizations face as they implement technology, and opportunities for developing strategic approaches to effectively embark on innovation. Gain a deeper understanding of technology's strategic importance in measuring, demonstrating, and increasing the impact of your organization. This course will help you to acquire the know-how to improve engagement with global cause-funding ecosystem partners.
