Managing Director (CAPAL)

The Role

The Conference on Asian Pacific American Leadership (CAPAL) seeks a Managing Director to oversee the day-to-day operations of CAPAL, in addition to the long-term development of the organization under the strategic direction of an engaged and supportive Board of Directors.

The Managing Director will be a results-oriented leader who will move the organization forward by developing major new financial resources, improving efficiency of operations and increasing community awareness. The ideal candidate is self-driven, passionate about CAPAL’s mission and eager to embrace a visible leadership role in the Washington, DC AANHPI community.

Who We Are

The Conference on Asian Pacific American Leadership is a Washington, DC-based national non-profit organization that seeks to empower AANHPI youth by increasing access to public service opportunities and building a strong Asian American, Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander public service pipeline. Working in the Washington, D.C. metropolitan area for 30 years, CAPAL’s leadership consists of two full-time staff members, approximately 15 members of the Board of Directors, and an Advisory Council.

Primary Responsibilities

Mission Orientation

  • Demonstrated commitment to and understanding of CAPAL’s mission and issues impacting the AANHPI community; ability to effectively communicate CAPAL’s mission and impact to a variety of stakeholders

Long-Term Strategic Planning

  • Think strategically and identify opportunities for growth and increased impact
  • Create, implement and track the progress of a 3-5 year strategic plan that strengthens the mission of CAPAL and expands operational capabilities, including but not limited to: expanded sponsorships and programming, organizational growth
  • Ensure ongoing excellence in all CAPAL programs through strategic program evaluations (e.g., debrief documents, exit memos) and improving internal systems and policies as needed to achieve the strategic goals and sustain CAPAL into the future

Development / External Relations

  • Set annual development goals and priorities; develop and implement a fundraising plan to increase contributions and expand partnership base
  • Identify and pursue new funding opportunities with donors and partners
  • Cultivate relationships with current CAPAL stakeholders to sustain and grow programmatic activities; key stakeholder groups include:
    • Donors / partners for sponsorship opportunities (e.g., federal agencies, private sector organizations)
    • Community and peer organizations (e.g., organizations serving the AANHPI community)
    • Board of Directors alumni
    • Advisory Council members
    • Individual donors
  • Develop and track proposals and reports for all federal agency, foundation and corporate fundraising
  • Represent CAPAL at meetings /events with current and prospective donors / partners; maintain effective working relationships with community and peer AANHPI-focused organizations by regularly attending events in the DMV area

Financial Oversight

  • Ensure appropriate financial structures and oversee the use of resources by adhering to revenue and expense budgets
  • Serve as a point of contact for donors / partners; process invoices and provide reports to donors / partners, as needed
  • Work with the Treasurer to provide regular updates to the Board of Directors on expected revenue and development—in particular, their impact on CAPAL’s overall and long-term financial health

Staff Management

  • Oversee and review staff activities, which include programmatic activities (e.g., event planning / logistics, curriculum design for speaker series, external communications) and operational activities (e.g., maintaining database of stakeholders, tracking expenses)
  • Manage CAPAL staff members (approx. 1 full-time regular staff member and 1 part-time / intern staff member), including hiring, supervision, performance evaluation and conflict resolution; maintain a working culture that attracts, retains and motivates staff

Managing Director and Board of Directors

CAPAL is governed by a Board of Directors that also supports the duties of the staff, as needed. The Managing Director works closely with the Board on both strategic and tactical responsibilities, including: developing and implementing a long-term strategic plan for CAPAL and leveraging the Board as an extended resource for supporting day-to-day programmatic activities on an at-need basis. He/she/they is expected to establish a strong working relationship with the Board and maintain a clear line of communication regarding staff activities.

Required Qualifications

  • 5-7 years of demonstrated experience in and a successful track record of fundraising for a nonprofit; experience in managing federal funding is a plus
  • Experience with developing and implementing long-term strategic plans
  • Understanding of financial management and budgeting, particularly for nonprofit organizations
  • Strong verbal and written communications skills; comfort with public speaking and representing the interests of CAPAL with external stakeholders
  • Experience supervising and managing junior staff
  • Strong interpersonal skills; experience working respectfully and successfully with Board(s) of Directors and volunteers
  • Interest in and passion for serving the AANHPI community; understanding of stakeholders in the AANHPI community, particularly in the DMV area
  • Ability to work in an entrepreneurial, self-directed working environment
  • Minimum education requirement: Bachelor’s Degree

Reports To: Co-Chairs of the Board of Directors

Staff Reporting To This Position: Programs and Operations Associate, CAPAL Staff Intern, and any other junior staff
