About the Human Resources Department

The Human Resources Department creates and provides programs that support the Foundation’s greatest asset: its people. We strive to be a strategic partner and thought leader in all areas of human resources management, including: employee relations, compensation, benefits, talent acquisition, performance management, staff development and training, change management, and retention. Our team is also responsible for ensuring compliance with state and federal regulations in the workplace. One of our goals is to help foster an inclusive work environment where staff are supported for success in their roles and growth in their careers. Across all departments at the McCormick Foundation’s downtown office and Cantigny Park in Wheaton, our team supports nearly 200 employees (full-time, part-time, and seasonal staff).

Opportunity: HR Intern

Cantigny Park, part of the McCormick Foundation, is looking for a Human Resources Intern to perform and support a range of activities in the department. Specifically, the HR Intern will have the opportunity to learn about and contribute to day-to-day team functions such as processing payroll, assisting with new hire processing, maintaining databases and filing systems, conducting background checks for applicants, and special projects on updating department policies and procedures. This is an incredible learning opportunity for a recent college graduate or graduate student in a Human Resources Management or similar program looking for practical experience in a fast-paced and collaborative office environment. This is a part-time position (16-24 hours/week) based in Wheaton, Illinois that reports to the HR Generalist.

Responsibilities

  • Provide exceptional customer service staff by answering questions and proactively troubleshooting HR related challenges
  • Process payroll and assist in managing the HRIS/Payroll system
  • Support the HR Generalist in administering compensation, employee benefits plan, and other related projects
  • Support HR Generalist in workers compensation, FMLA, terminations, and incident reporting (OSHA 300 and 301A Forms)
  • Assist with recruiting functions, including: scheduling phone screens and interviews, ordering background checks, and processing job offers/ declines, updating job descriptions, and coordinating new hire processing
  • Revise and update employee handbook and other HR process templates and documents
  • Audit files/forms for compliance, such as the I-9
Qualifications
  • Recent college graduate or currently enrolled in an accredited graduate degree program in human resources management or closely related degree program
  • Excellent interpersonal, writing and presentation skills and an effective communicator with diverse constituencies in a variety of settings
  • Outstanding project management skills and attention to detail
  • Task-oriented, inquisitive, and thoughtful
  • Adaptability and flexibility in a fast-paced, team-oriented environment with the ability to work independently
  • Excellent computer skills and comfort with MS Office Suite, database experience preferred
  • Demonstrated passion for the Foundation’s values with commitment to deliver results measured against the Foundation’s mission
  • Ability to work in the United States without sponsorship
