Executive Director/Senior Program Officer (CARE)

The Cancer Research Endowment (CARE) Fund is a new public-private partnership, established by a 10-year commitment from the State of Washington to match new private investment in cancer research and innovation in our State. With the establishment of the CARE Fund, Washington State is making a commitment to enrich the ecosystem with sustained investment in cancer research, prevention, and care, with the aim of reducing long-term health costs, saving lives, and relieving pain and suffering. The CARE Fund endeavors to provide sustained investment of up to $10 million each year, leveraged by a 1:1 match from non-state sources (up to $20 million annually) to attract top talent and partners, and set the stage for the next big discovery in cancer research. Empire Health Foundation (EHF), based in Spokane, is the program administrator for the CARE Fund and will serve as the employer for the Executive Director/Senior Program Officer (ED/SPO).

The Opportunity

The Executive Director/Senior Program Officer will partner with the State-appointed Board of Directors from leading research institutions, patient advocacy organizations, health care providers, and businesses working towards the commercialization of life sciences research to design and launch the CARE Fund. The ED/SPO’s specific responsibilities include:

  • Strategic and Operational Leadership
  • Fund/Investment Development
  • Advocacy
  • Grant Development and Management 

The ideal candidate will be a confident, effective leader who is able to serve as a bridge between the cancer research community in Washington State and potential new funders. The new Executive Director/Senior Program Officer will be energized by the opportunity to grow cancer research investment in Washington State exponentially.  A talented connector and collaborator, she or he will be at ease interacting with multiple stakeholders and partners in a variety of settings.

To Be Considered

Candidates should have a degree in the sciences and a minimum of eight years’ relevant experience. An advanced degree is preferred.
