Rebooting Philanthropy: Transforming Philanthropic Practices Together Toward a More Just, Equitable, and Sustainable Field

Are you an early-career professional looking to develop skills and insight, or possibly, a mid-career professional newly entering the sector or aimed at taking your leadership to the next level? Wherever you are in your philanthropy journey, we welcome you to join us as we endeavor to learn more about existing structures, and envision a more just, equitable, and sustainable future for our profession.

The convening will take place on Friday, May 3rd from 9 am - 2 pm at Barr Foundation. Mixed sessions including a panel discussion, breakout conversations, and a skill-building workshop are planned. Our hope is to foster strong discourse around the key issues facing philanthropy while also providing concrete skills and lessons that you can take back to your organization. Please see below for details about the keynote sessions.

Panel Discussion:

How can philanthropy keep up with the fast pace of cultural movements?

Join us to hear a range of perspectives on the topic of cultural justice and change movements. We'll learn from experts working in the field at both the grassroots and philanthropic level. Inspired by the conversation at EPIP Boston's February Breakfast Discussion, this panel conversation will further investigate how funders can utilize existing structures to leverage their power to affect long term change in collaboration with their nonprofit partners.

Moderator: Dana Karlsson Campion, Grants and Communications Manager, Cedar Tree Foundation and Steering Committee Member, EPIP Boston

Panelists:

Roseann Bongiovanni, Executive Director, Green Roots Chelsea

Kalila Barnett, Climate Program Officer, Barr Foundation and former Executive Director of Alternatives for Community and Environment in Roxbury

Tate Williams, Science and Environment Editor for Inside Philanthropy

Breakout Discussions with Panelists

Following the morning panel discussion, participants will have the opportunity to engage with topics more deeply through breakout discussions with each of the panelists.

Skill-Building Workshop:

Affecting Change as an Emerging Practitioner in Philanthropy

Jeff Poulos, Chief Executive Officer of Philanthropy Massachusetts, will lead a workshop on developing your personal strategy within your organization, the role of empathy in philanthropy, and how to understand the power structure of your organization.
