EPIP Boston | March 2017 Breakfast Conversation

Centering Justice in Philanthropy

NEW DATE: March 28 (rescheduled due to Winter Storm Stella)

The way we act in communities, the composition of our staffs, the narratives we use in talking about the problems we wish to solve, and the way we interact with partners—among other things—speak volumes about who we are and what we value as grantmakers.

In their recent article in SSIR, titled, "Shifting Philanthropy from Charity to Justice," authors Dorian O. Burton and Brian C.B. Barnes propose an alternate way for philanthropy to think about how and why it gives—one that centers justice-based grantmaking over a goal of simply charity. The authors present seven questions for us to consider as we think about how we can incorporate this framework into our work.

In this breakfast discussion, we’ll dive in and discuss:

  • The seven dimensions for centering our work around justice
  • What aspects of this mindset that are already underway at our organizations, and which are the most difficult to achieve
  • Our own agency in bringing justice frameworks into our organizations
