Director, Investments (CF)

Calvert Foundation is seeking a Director, Investments. S/he will be a senior member of the current 9-person investments team at the organization and integral to the execution on the organization’s portfolio strategy.

S/he will have a primary focus on developing new business, especially in the Climate Change Solutions sector, an emerging sector focus for Calvert Foundation, developing impactful and risk-appropriate lending opportunities in both clean energy and environment. This person will work collaboratively with other members of the Investments team to develop, structure, underwrite, originate, and monitor financing opportunities that scale proven models of success and/or demonstrate new intermediary financing capacity and solutions to address the issue of climate change. While we anticipate the majority of this person’s time will be focused on developing and executing on the US climate solutions pipeline/portfolio, as a small investments team we are all generalists to some degree by design, and as such as such, this person would engage in other impact sectors of the global portfolio, including financial inclusion and small business/SME finance, affordable housing, education, and health as needed. S/he will report to the Vice President of Investments. The position will require moderate domestic travel and is based in Bethesda, MD.

Specific responsibilities:

  • Advance Calvert Foundation’s Climate Change portfolio sector strategy and its ongoing development over time;
  • Grow Calvert Foundation’s Climate Change Solutions financing pipeline, involving:
    • Identifying partners with sub-sector technical expertise, strategic alignment, and deployment capacity;
    • Financial structuring to ensure credit risk is mitigated and partnership is operationally feasible and economic;
    • Credit analysis and underwriting of counterparty and/or underlying transactions;
    • Cultivation and management of philanthropic and other credit enhancement providers and co-investors;
    • On-going partner relationship management and portfolio quality monitoring
  • Identify sector and portfolio credit risk trends, manage actively monitored and/or classified assets, and re-structure troubled loans and implement work-outs as needed;
  • Develop, coach, and mentor investment team officers;
  • Advance Calvert Foundation’s thought leadership in the Climate Change Solutions sector through network building, representation at industry conferences, and online and social media communications

Qualifications:

  • A commitment to mission and an entrepreneurial and collaborative approach to their work;
  • More than 10 years of experience in debt financing, with experience in fund structuring and equity investing a plus;
  • A strong network of relationships in the US environmental finance sector;
  • Excellent project management and relationship management skills;
  • Excellent written, presentation, and verbal communication skills;
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment, while ensuring strong attention to detail;
  • Systems and process minded. Salesforce experience preferred;
  • Collaborative and sharing nature, can-do attitude, and good sense of humor;
  • Ability to travel as necessary
