Philanthropy and COVID-19

These unprecedented times have led many in the social sector to call for a radical shift in the way that philanthropy operates in response to the COVID-19 crisis. Some of the most common themes include:

  • Proactively communicating with grantees and asking what their communities need, then working with them to help them provide it.
  • Providing additional resources to help both current and future grantees serve their communities, whether through a new response fund or by increasing current funding letters beyond the customary 5% spend.
  • Advocating for broader changes to our social safety net, including paid family and sick leave for all workers.
  • Standing strong against those practicing and promoting racism in response to COVID-19.

Many funders have also taken action during this time, by dedicating funding to COVID-19 and creating response funds specifically for this crisis. Others have pushed for the sector to continue to bring an equity lens to its work, as societal inequities will affect the impact of this pandemic on different communities.

Calls to Action for Philanthropy

COVID-19 Calls for Philanthropy to Redefine Urgency (Kururama Masomere, Nonprofit Quarterly): "As a racial justice advocate and woman of color in philanthropy, it is clearer now than ever that our careful, self-paced, and guarded approach to place-based grantmaking, the core function of a foundation’s existence in “normal” times, reveals that we never fully understood a critical truth of what racial equity work really means."

Pandemic Philanthropy: Moving From Relief to Power (Dimple Abichandani, Inside Philanthropy): "This moment calls for a long-term, large-scale philanthropic response to shift who has power in our democracy and our economy."

Philanthropy in the Time of COVID-19 (Carmen Rojas, PhD via Medium): "What are we going to do to shift the balance of power and resources?"

Letter from PSOs Encouraging Increased Giving in this Time of Crisis: "The strength of a funder’s grantees at the end of this crisis will be a much better measure of the significance of a foundation than the size of its endowment."
