Artist Programs Associate (JMF)

POSITION OVERVIEW:

The Joan Mitchell Foundation celebrates the life of abstract artist Joan Mitchell by expanding awareness of her pioneering work and fulfilling her wish to support and provide opportunities for visual artists. Through grants, residencies, and related initiatives, the Foundation advances the work of today's artists and amplifies their essential contributions to communities around the world. 

The Artist Programs Associate (APA) provides administrative support and coordination for the Joan Mitchell Foundation’s artist-centered programs, which support contemporary visual artists. These include but are not limited to: grantmaking, professional development, artist legacy and early career artist programs; departmental initiatives, meetings, and related events. The APA works closely with program managers in the Artist Programs department in the Foundation’s New York City office, and reports to the Senior Director of Artist Programs.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES WILL INCLUDE:

  • Serve as point of contact for artists and for program inquiries
  • Create and maintain central calendar of departmental events, programs and projects
  • Support the development and dissemination of JMF program information and materials via print, web, eblasts, newsletters and social media channels
  • Support the administration of application cycles for artist programs, including outreach efforts, nominations and invitations to apply, online applications, technical assistance to applicants, review and selection processes, notification, intake and compliance
  • Coordinate logistical and technical aspects of professional development consultations and workshops for artists including registration, confirmation, troubleshooting, and evaluation
  • Coordinate travel and lodging for artists, jurors and other external guests
  • Support the Foundation’s alumni artist relations, including network development, information gathering and tracking, and engagement activities
  • Track, record and maintain programmatic recordkeeping systems, including but not limited to: digital files on the JMF server, hard copy files as needed, application and reporting materials on online platforms and the Foundation’s database
  • Gather and synthesize data and feedback for program research, evaluation and reporting
  • Schedule, circulate agendas and take notes for departmental meetings and convenings
  • Support the logistics and on-site needs for meetings, convenings and public events arrange catering as necessary
  • Coordinate with staff at the Joan Mitchell Center (JMC) in New Orleans as needed to ensure that administrative protocols are being implemented consistently across the NYC and New Orleans offices, and to build a working culture of communication, collaboration and support
  • Other duties as assigned

QUALIFICATIONS, KNOWLEDGE SKILL REQUIRED:

  • Bachelor’s degree in arts or humanities field or equivalent work experience
  • Minimum three years working in an administrative capacity, preferably in an arts or nonprofit setting
  • Excellent communication skills, written and oral, and a level of comfort with public speaking
  • Familiarity and ease with Mac-based computer systems
  • Intermediate to advanced proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint
  • Experience working with database systems (Salesforce), online form builders and application platforms (Submittable) preferred
  • Proactive, detail-oriented and solution-driven approach
  • History of relationship building with artists
  • High level of personal and professional integrity and trustworthiness with a strong work
