Accounting Manager, Managed Organizations

The Accounting Manager plays a lead role managing routine accounting operations and detailed entity and project reporting for New Venture Fund and our other managed organizations. This position must also identify improvements and implement them. This position is a team leader and will have supervisory responsibility. The Accounting Manager must have a strong understanding of nonprofit accounting practices and financial controls and must be able to work well in a fast-paced environment.

About Managed Organizations

Arabella Advisors provides operations and management support to multiple public charities, including a 501(c)(3) named the New Venture Fund and a 501(c)(4).  These managed organizations house new and innovative public interest projects and nonprofits, as well as coordinate collaborative initiatives between donors and administer grants programs. This type of structure is commonly referred to as fiscal sponsorship, and candidates are highly encouraged to research fiscal sponsorship prior to a first interview.  The managed organizations provide support to a diverse range of projects, including many focused on conservation and global health.  The organizations have also provided fiscal sponsorship to projects focused on voter registration, public policy, education, disaster recovery, and music and the arts.

Essential Responsibilities
  • General ledger maintenance and entity-level financial reporting in accordance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles
  • Research and determine methods to better leverage system tools to streamline existing processes and to enhance controls and the quality and accuracy of financial data
  • Assist in the coordination and on-going management of the monthly financial close process
  • Review and evaluate the monthly close processes to determine level of inefficiency and provide recommendations for improvement
  • Assist with overall department administration, including the coordination of various initiatives
  • Perform/review routine GL account reconciliations as part of monthly closing procedures
  • Prepare/review schedules to support financial audits and preparation of Form 990 and other tax/regulatory returns
  • Ensure compliance with federal grant reporting requirements
  • Provide leadership, coaching, and performance feedback to assigned staff 
  • Assist the CFO and Senior Director, Managed Organizations with special projects
Required Competencies
Education
  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting/finance/nonprofit administration required;
  • Master’s Degree in accounting/finance/nonprofit administration preferred Professional certification preferred
Experience and Skills
  • Seven or more years of relevant professional experience in non-profit organizations, including oversight of annual audit and preparation of federal Form 990 and supporting schedules
  • Experience managing accounting records for federal grants/contracts and familiarity with federal procurement guidelines and regulations such as OMB Circulars
  • Proficiency with accounting software (Microsoft Dynamics GP/Management Reporter preferred) and Excel spreadsheets
  • Experience managing staff responsible for full-cycle GL, AP, AR and payroll processes
  • Strong attention to detail and accuracy
  • Solid analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Ability to manage and meet deadlines for multiple projects simultaneously
  • Excellent verbal and written communication, including the ability to communicate complex financial matters to non-financial personnel
  • Ability to work within multi-functional teams
  • Experience in philanthropic or consulting environments a plus
