Managing Director, Development

Today, we offer After-School Debate in English and Spanish to hundreds of students across Boston and beyond, and also coach teachers to reach more students through our Debate-Inspired Classrooms program. In our Resolved program, tailored to center the experiences and assets of Black and Latino young men, we create culturally-responsive communities in which participants use their voices and debate skills to address real-world issues. Across our programs, we are working towards the vision that all young people in Boston - especially those who’ve been marginalized - are engaged in critical discourse, informed by evidence, and empowered to lead.

Each year, BDL reaches 5,000 students, connects with 350 teachers, and engages more than 550 volunteers through partnerships with 40 middle and high schools across Boston, Somerville, and Everett.  Our impact is clear:

Higher Graduation Rates: 95% of students who regularly participate in debate graduate from high school in four years, compared to the BPS average of 75%.

College Ready:  Debaters are 89% more likely to attend a four-year college or university and 80% more likely to graduate than non-debaters.

BDL’s FY24 budget is 2.6MM and there are 12 full-time employees.

ABOUT THE POSITION

BDL is ready to expand and deepen our impact to elevate discourse across greater Boston.  In the next five years, our strategic priorities include growing our programmatic work through current and new partnerships with schools and community organizations.

In order to achieve these goals,  we are thrilled to announce a newly created position of Managing Director, Development (MD) to catalyze our philanthropic initiatives. The MD will be responsible for creating and implementing a strategic, innovative multi-year development plan to support the organization's growth goals and increase revenue streams, with a focus on major gifts and planned giving.
