    Didn’t make it to the CHANGE Philanthropy UNITY Summit? That’s ok! Join us on December 3rd to talk about the highlights and key takeaways from the UNITY Summit. We’ll start with an informal panel of attendees who can share what they’ve learned and answer questions. We’ll also spend some time reflecting on EPIP LA’s programming in 2019 and brainstorming for next year.

    EPIP NY | Self-Care: Mindfulness and Meditation

    Join us for the final workshop in our Self-Care Series, an evening of meditation & mindfulness lead by Janna Bilski. We will explore how these practices can help us in our daily lives to support and sustain our overall wellbeing from a self-care perspective while also helping us to be greater agents of social change. You will learn the basics of meditation & mindfulness, and how we can use these methods as a tool to deal with the challenges, we face both in our daily lives and in the world. Research on these practices is growing to show a host of benefits. Come and learn about this emerging and exciting area of focus within the area of social change.

    The Session with Include:

    • Guided meditation
    • Practical advice on how to use meditation & mindfulness to help reduce stress and anxiety
    • Tips on how to start a daily practice 

     

    Janna Bilski

     

    Janna Bilski works on the Investments team at the Ford Foundation, an international philanthropy focused on advancing social justice and reducing inequality. Jamma started a mindfulness and meditation program at the Ford Foundation in 2016, where she currently teaches a weekly class. She also leads classes at Kadampa Meditation Center in New York City. Janna is passionate about the practice of mindfulness and meditation and sees these practices as an integral component of long-term social change. She is a strong advocate for advancing mindfulness ins schools to help youth learn "inner" tools to navigate the challenges they face and to thrive. Janna is currently completing the Training in Mindfulness Facilitation course at the Semel Insitute for Neuroscience and Human Behavior at UCLA. Janna received a B.A. from New York University's Gallatin School of Individualized Study and completed post-graduate studies at Regent's College School of Psychotherapy and Counseling in London, England. 

     

    The session will be suitable for all levels. No special clothing is required. The session will be one hour, with additional time allotted for questions.

    EPIP LA | White Anti-Racism: Walking the Walk

    This workshop is an opportunity to strengthen your ability to be an agent of interpersonal, organizational, and systemic change - showing up as a "co-conspirator" in the work of racial justice. This highly interactive session will give participants a hands-on experience to explore their experience of whiteness, gain tools for having difficult conversations, and begin to identify and tackle institutional and systemic racism in their workplace and communities.

    Though the primary audience for this workshop is white people, people of color interested in being with white people on this journey are welcome.

    The workshop will be facilitated by Christine Margiotta, Executive Director of Social Venture Partners (SVP). In addition to their core program, the Systems Change Accelerator, SVP provides facilitation, training, and consulting to build a community of nonprofits, foundations, and individuals committed to creating a more just Los Angeles.

    Griffith Park

    EPIP LA | Night Hike

    Come join fellow Los Angeles EPIPers and friends for an evening adventure in Griffith Park!

    We will hike together by the light of the moon, connecting with peers while enjoying amazing views of the city. Our journey will be about 3 miles round trip with around 500 feet of elevation gain. Bring plenty of warm layers, sturdy shoes, water, and a flashlight (just in case). We also encourage you to come ready with an ask or question for the group, a reflection on 2019, or an intention for 2020.

    Meet at 7:30pm at the south entrance of the Merry Go Round Parking Lot #1. This lot is on the east side of Griffith Park off of Crystal Springs Drive (click here for map).

    Join us at TanakaSan to enjoy some treats and drinks together. We'll celebrate what we've accomplished this year and look forward to what next year will bring. Friends, colleagues, and family welcome. 

    In addition to the holiday party, we also have a volunteer opportunity. On December 9th we're volunteering at Pike Market Food Bank.     EPIP Bay Area | Advocacy Training: Foundations and Elections

    The 2020 elections are right around the corner, and if you work for a foundation that wants to engage in and/or fund election-related activities, this training is for you! It reviews the federal tax rules governing public and private foundation support for election-related activities and also explains the types of nonpartisan activities in which foundations may be involved, such as voter guides and candidate debates and forums. In addition, the session covers ballot measures and examines the special rules for private foundations and voter registration drives.

    Participants will learn:

    • How private and public foundations can fund nonpartisan election-related activities;
    • Special rules for private foundations looking to fund voter registration; and
    • How foundations can conduct civic engagement work.

    Hosted by EPIP's Bay Area Chapter and Alliance for Justice's Bolder Advocacy program. 

    Note: This training workshop is designed and intended for grantmakers and other staff members of philanthropic institutions.
