Assistant Director for Advancement

University Advancement, The Graduate School, is seeking a proactive team-player committed to graduate  education and public scholarship to serve as our next Assistant Director for Advancement. The Assistant Director for Advancement (ADOA) will play a critical role in increasing private and corporate support for graduate students, with a focus on underrepresented minority graduate students at the University of Washington and for the UW Press.   The ADOA’s core responsibilities are to qualify and cultivate donors with the capacity for making gifts up to $100,000 and to increase the scope and impact of annual giving to the Graduate School and UW Press.  This role will focus on corporate partnerships and developing strategic corporate prospects for the Graduate School. Within the Graduate School, the ADOA’s focus will be advancing the Dean’s priority of strengthening diversity in graduate education by raising funds for the Graduate Opportunities and Minority Achievement Program (GO-MAP).  This is an outstanding opportunity for a motivated fundraising professional to join a team in launching a fundraising campaign at a time when the need for graduate education in our state is growing. 

 

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES 

Frontline Fundraising 
The ADOA will increase major giving to the UW Graduate School and UW Press by qualifying prospective donors and cultivating existing donors with the capacity to make gifts up to $100,000. Develop and maintain effective relationships with corporate partners and determine when and how a corporation can be successfully solicited for a gift. Work with the Advancement staff to create case statements and proposals for corporate outreach. Part of the front-line fundraising time will be devoted to advancing the Dean’s priority of strengthening diversity in graduate education by raising funds for the Graduate Opportunities and Minority Achievement Program (GO-MAP). 

•Proactively reach out to qualify Graduate School and the UW Press leads by making 8 – 10 discovery calls and emails per week and an average of 3-4 in-person visits per month. 

•Solicit individual and corporate prospective donors when appropriate and qualify major gift prospects to proactively cultivate for additional future gifts.  

•Creatively identify new prospect leads in concert with colleagues in the Graduate School, UW Press, Advancement Research, and UW volunteers. 

•With the Director for Advancement, work with front-line fundraising colleagues in Regional and Planned Giving to develop and support strategies for qualification and solicitation efforts. 

Constituency Relations and Stewardship 
The ADOA will increase the number of annual donors to the UW Graduate School and UW Press and help donors see the impact of their gifts.  This position identifies strategic approaches for building and maintaining purposeful and substantive lifelong relationships with students, alumni and friends to develop a philanthropic environment in the UW Graduate School and among UW graduate alumni. 

•Oversee and coordinate annual giving efforts for the UW Graduate School and the UW Press, including student calling and direct mail activities. 

•Responsible for motivating donor attendance and preparing briefing materials associated with fundraising and stewardship activities for potential major donors for the Graduate School and UW Press. 

•In partnership with the Graduate School advancement team, manage the Dean’s Club receptions and develop other opportunities and venues to advance the Dean’s Club program, as appropriate. 

•In collaboration with Graduate School program leaders and the Graduate and Professional Student Senate (GPSS), develop and advance graduate students’ lifelong affinity and engagement with the University of Washington.  A focus of this work will be cultivating community and affinity in the GO-MAP alumni community. 

 

Other 
The ADOA will be a proactive team-player invested in the success and growth of the advancement programs in the Graduate School and UW Press.  To achieve these goals, the ADOA must be able to professionally and clearly articulate the vision and funding priorities for the Graduate School and the UW Press verbally and in writing to prospects, donors, and university colleagues.  

•Provide staff support for development related activities in the School as needed.  

•Represent the Graduate School at University, community and professional functions, as appropriate. 

•As part of the University-wide development planning process, assist the Director for Advancement in the annual establishment of goals, objectives and strategies for development and advancement activities.  Regularly evaluate programs, assess progress toward goals, and report on results to the Director. 

•Participate in the University’s prospect management and tracking system. 

•Other duties as assigned and necessary. 

•Direction is received from the Director for Advancement.    

Requirements:    
•Bachelor’s degree and a minimum of 3 years of progressively responsible experience in institutional development or fundraising, with experience in frontline fundraising preferred. 

•Proficiency with standard office software such as: Microsoft Office Suite (Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook and PowerPoint), and internet browsers. Willingness and ability to learn how to use the ADVANCE database system and other proprietary software products.

Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration.

Desired:    
•Experience in, and commitment to the mission of, higher education.  Advanced degrees (M.A. and Ph.D.) beneficial. 

•An understanding of diversity as a key to long-term health of public universities. 

•An understanding of the role of graduate education within the university as a whole and the ability to express knowledgably and persuasively the case for graduate student support.  

 

Conditions of Employment:   
•Ability to work a flexible schedule for events scheduled on evenings and weekends. 

•Ability to travel locally, regionally and nationally as necessary.  Ability to travel includes having reliable transportation for local travel that will allow attendance to meeting in a reasonable timeframe.
