As we enter our next phase of growth, ILFI is searching for a seasoned fund development professional who exhibits a strong passion for the environment and the organization’s mission and can inspire and steward a global philanthropy initiative to significantly increase its unearned income potential. 

Position summary & Candidate profile

ILFI seeks a creative, collaborative, results-driven executive leader with a proven record of building a comprehensive fundraising program to advance the mission, goals and strategic priorities as well as advancing a culture of philanthropy system-wide. This individual will be responsible for supporting and expanding the Institute’s existing foundation grant, corporate sponsorship, and membership programs while creating the infrastructure to develop a robust major gifts program, execute annual campaigns, and increase corporate foundation and government funding.

The V.P., Philanthropy will have significant experience developing and managing a high-performance team achieving bold fundraising goals annually, experience improving systems and processes and demonstrated financial acumen.  The VP will effectively represent the organization’s development interests to internal and external constituencies and will work in close collaboration with the CEO and Board of Directors to achieve philanthropic goals and build a case for support.

Nature and scope of position

Leadership:

  • Develop actionable strategies for meeting and exceeding fundraising goals through Foundation, Corporate and Individual support.
  • Formulate short- and long-term goals concerning the fundraising needs of the organization.
  • Structure the development team to best approach a comprehensive philanthropic program.
  • Must possess strong business knowledge and ability to think in a variety of business environments.
  • Must be able to inspire trust and camaraderie in employees and potential donors alike.
  • Display a proven ability to lead staff through a department transition, including planning and organizing, evaluation and analysis, effective decision-making, motivating and supervising staff.

Management:

  • Track revenue and fundraising trends, then use the information to predict future opportunities for expansion efforts and avoid any downtrends in individual, corporate or foundation gifts.
  • Discover new and potentially lucrative revenue streams for expansion of the organization’s fundraising efforts.
  • Cultivate and maintain relationships with major donors by responding to their inquiries, keeping them apprised of recent events with the organization and sharing the progress their donations have made possible.
  • Exercise exceptional time management skills and meet fundraising deadlines.
  • Demonstrate exceptional writing and communication skills.
  • Motivate a team to action and keep order amongst competing interests.
  • Use financial management skills to create, analyze, and manage budgets.
  • Establish performance measures, monitor results, and evaluate the efficacy of the fund development program.
  • Assure design and maintenance of donor and prospect records, gift management systems, and informational reports.

Community Impact:

  • Work with a wide variety of potential donors and supporters, relying on strong interpersonal skills.
  • Speak publicly, make presentations and facilitate donor meetings with members of the board.
  • Raise awareness of the organization and its primary goals through outreach efforts, regular community engagement, publications and media relations.
  • Appropriately represent the institution, board and CEO to donors, prospects, regulators, development committees and fundraising volunteers.
  • Help identify, cultivate, recruit, train, and develop fundraising volunteers and leadership.

Organization/Board Resource Development:

  • Maintain accountability and ensure compliance with all regulations and laws, as well as the code of ethics for fundraising professionals.
  • Ensure that philanthropy and fund development are carried out in keeping with the organization’s values, mission, vision and plans.
  • Participate with the CEO, staff and board in charting the organization’s course in fund development.
  • Keep informed of developments in philanthropy and fund development as well as the general fields of management and the not-for-profit sector; inform the CEO, development committee and board on current trends issues, problems and activities to facilitate policy making. Recommend policy positions concerning fund development.

Qualifications

Required:

  • Bachelor’s degree.
  • 7-10 years of direct experience in the development and implementation of comprehensive fund development strategies.
  • At least 5-7 years of supervisory experience, with a proven track record of successful management and retention of employees and experience establishing goals and metrics to evaluate strategies and team effectiveness.
  • Ability to engender the trust and confidence of the CEO, Board, senior leadership team, staff and donors in achieving fully-integrated philanthropy across the organization.
  • Working knowledge of fundraising software and the ability to embrace new technology.
  • Excellent communication skills with demonstrated ability to write and speak effectively.

Desired:

  • Master’s degree and CFRE certification.
  • Experience with Mac operating system and related software.
  • Experience with Salesforce CRM database.

 

 

About the organization

This position is located in the Seattle office. It is full-time, exempt and typically 40 hours per week, with occasional overtime and/or travel required. Compensation is commensurate with experience and is supplemented by ILFI’s generous benefits package that includes health, dental, vision, and employee life insurance, 403(b) retirement matching (US), three weeks of paid annual leave and twelve days of annual sick leave.
