Ryan is a Steering Committee member of the San Diego Chapter of Emerging Practitioners in Philanthropy and will be talking about civic technology in philanthropy at the 2015 SXSW Conference in Austin. It is widely agreed that modern philanthropy is comprised of an individuals time, talent and treasure. What has not yet been agreed to however is how the non-financial measures of this equation are calculated and how those skills are cultivated to either maximize their ongoing impact or get to a point where those volunteers become regular financial donors. How can we identify and develop talent concurrently with their propensity to give? When should we ask volunteers to give and how much should we ask for? And one of the most painful recurring questions for nonprofits, how do we get our board members to give? Answers lie in the ability to track each step in someone’s civic evolution placed against a corresponding set of measures identifying the differing levels of participation. There are five steps to becoming a civic leader; 1. Learn – Attend meetings, get connected. 2. Support – Volunteer for a cause or organization. 3. Influence – Share your passion with personal networks to create more awareness for the cause and recruit new supporters. 4. Give – Give financially to your cause. 5. Lead – Organize a community movement or project. Ryan works for The San Diego Foundation, where he builds capacity for the Malin Burnham San Diego Center for Civic Engagement through the Civic Leadership Fund. In a recent survey of 260 nonprofits, nearly half of the human resource executive staff reported an increase in their overall organizational influence – predominantly through more recognition by top-level executives that HR plays an integral role in executing an organizations mission. This represents a big opportunity for nonprofits and both public and private foundations to increase their capacity, be more impactful and achieve their goals through the identification and development of talented staff. As the interpretation of social justice moves away from its previous connotation of transferring wealth to one of building social infrastructure to help all members of society reach their potential, we are also seeing a parallel shift from purely program-based philanthropy to a campaign-like approach where engaging and building nontraditional constituencies and developing cross sector partnerships are the key to delivering tangible outcomes to those they seek to serve. The study, which was undertaken by the consultancy Nonprofit HR, reveals a renewed acknowledgement of HR’s role in achieving organizational success and on further reflection, its ability to equip organizations with new talent that will be able to adapt to the rapidly changing philanthropic sector. EPIP San Diego held a workshop on Communicating with Authenticity, learning to structure conversations to build mutual inquiry, understanding, and trust that help generate more effective collaboration and action. Participants from around the San Diego community learned how to make specific communication choices – speaking, questions, listening, silence, reflection – that build the relationships to increase organizational, community, and social change impact. Following the dynamic workshop, participants responded that they now understand the responsibilities to “think clearly about what one wants to promote, prevent” in dialogue. That we should “respect our audience, listen, inquire, be curious.” Stop, listen, reframe or inquire. Create new pathways to connect the dots. Keep in mind difference between intention and impact. Be intentional about space for inviting and giving feedback. Ask questions that inspire new ways of thinking. Inquire for the sake of furthering dialogue and responding to previous questions. Next time you’re engaging in conversation, make it meaningful and constructive by being present and leaning in. Connect, engage, and give back. Read more
