Wellness is a Necessity, Not a Perk
May is Mental Health Awareness Month—a time when we come together to build awareness, reduce stigma, and encourage open conversations around mental health. But truly caring for our overall well-being requires more than an annual reminder. It demands daily practice. The conversation must continue all year long.
In philanthropy, our work asks a lot of us. It’s meaningful, values-driven, and deeply connected to the world we want to create and thrive in. However, because the needs we respond to are often urgent and ongoing, making space to step back can be difficult. We carry the weight of that responsibility—often in ways that are invisible. Until they’re not.
At the same time, we’re navigating a political environment where some of our institutions are being targeted and core values like equity, inclusion, and justice are under attack. That kind of pressure takes a toll, because the implications touch both our professional and personal lives.
In a field where many of us bring our whole selves to work, it’s no surprise that 76% of workers report their workplace has negatively impacted their mental well-being. The pressure to keep pushing forward can make it hard to recognize when we need to pause. But without rest, we don’t just risk burnout—we risk disconnecting from our purpose.
This is why, at EPIP, we’re striving to build something different. We believe wellness is essential to sustainability—and that self-care is a form of leadership.
That belief shows up in our organizational practices and policies:
- A 4-day workweek to create space for rest and renewal
- Monthly Reflection Weeks—full weeks dedicated to reenergizing, reflecting, and reconnecting
- Providing resources that support individual and team wellness
- A forthcoming sabbatical policy open to all staff, not just senior leaders
We also know wellness isn’t one-size-fits-all. Our needs are as diverse as we are, and we are committed to fostering a culture where people feel safe naming what they need—and supported when they do.
In honor of Mental Health Awareness Month, let’s commit to building a sector where well-being is not the exception, but the expectation. Where rest, healing, and care are not perks—but essential to our collective impact.
In wellness,
