Major Gifts and Events Manager (CFSY)

Overview of the position:

The Campaign for the Fair Sentencing of Youth is growing! Founded in 2009, the CFSY has continued to expand its reach and impact over the past decade, including to create opportunities for formerly incarcerated youth to thrive as adults and lead in their communities. As our work increases, so does our need for key strategic management of our growing major donor base, our growing repertoire of events, and our engagement with strategic private sector partners. The Major Gifts and Events Manager is a new position designed to help cultivate the organizations’ major donor relationships, and oversee the variety of fundraising and other events the organization hosts throughout the year. This is a key position which will liaise regularly with the organization's leadership, external partners, event planning consultants and others to ensure the organization continuously develops ambitious fundraising and relationship building plans and benchmarks, and meets its goals.

The Major Gifts and Events Manager’s primary responsibilities include cultivating and stewarding relationships with potential and existing major donors; helping develop and manage a range of communications including personal correspondence and large-scale campaigns; creating innovative recognition and other acknowledgement opportunities for donors and strategic partners; and serving as point person on a range of events, in partnership with other organizational staff and event planning consultants. The Major Gifts and Events Manager will also help inform and implement the organization’s broader fundraising strategy; assist with data management, tracking and report generation; and serve as the liaison between the organization and the Board of Directors Development committee.

The Major Gifts and Events Manager reports to the Director of Strategic Partnerships; and works in close collaboration with the Development department, the Communications department and the Executive Director to continuously inform, facilitate, and improve the work of the organization.


Primary Responsibilities:

Donor and Strategic Partnership Cultivation

  • Cultivate and steward relationships with potential and existing major donors, by creating regular, personalized and creative points of engagement and communications, supporting solicitation meetings, implementing events, and running online campaigns;
  • Manage (or assist Executive Director in managing) incoming and outgoing correspondence with major donors; draft tailored communications, acknowledgements, and cultivation materials and aid in their distribution;
  • Create and maintain lists of major donors and other supporters to share timely organizational and executive leadership information, materials, posts, and other communications;
  • Help develop and implement recognition opportunities for major donors and other strategic partners;
  • Create and implement at least one online campaign annually, to engage broader donor base (e.g. Giving Tuesday); and
  • Liaise with Development and Operations department colleagues to efficiently and diligently process and acknowledge gifts.


  • Work in close collaboration with the Development and other teams to create and execute a variety of development and strategic partnership events (e.g., fundraisers at board members’ homes, donor site visits, corporate and strategic partnership receptions, annual convening, and more);
  • Serve as primary point person on implementation of the CFSY’s annual convening;
  • Secure new sources of financial and in-kind support sponsorships and donations as appropriate for events; identify and ensure the fulfillment of all sponsorship benefits;
  • Work in close collaboration with event planning consultants to support the identification, implementation, and management of all pre-event and on-site event logistics for events; this includes, but is not limited to, location, space, food/beverage, audio/visual, attendance and registration, vendor relations) to meet or exceed financial goals and public education objectives;
  • Develop and manage, with support from Development department leadership, budgets for a variety of events;
  • Help develop event invitation lists, tailor invitations, and create other promotional materials;
  • Work closely with Communications team to create and publicize marketing materials, invitations, event details, website updates and social media posts;
  • Serve as primary CFSY point-person onsite during Development events for troubleshooting, liasioning, and site-specific needs; and
  • Create and execute follow-up plans for all events to capitalize on funding and strategic partnership potential, and steward relationships with attendees and recipients.

Board Liaising

  • Identify and develop creative and specific opportunities for board members to engagement in a range of development activities;
  • Collaborate with the Development Committee of the Board to establish annual strategies for board engagement and enforcement of board commitments; and
  • Support Board members and other partners in hosting special events to support our work.


  • Work closely with Development team to manage data on major donor and strategic partnership donations, contributions, preferences and emerging trends; perform data entry and generate reports; and
  • Provide Development team with data needed for tracking fundraising progress and goals.


  • Help develop and implement opportunities to increase proximity and engagement among and between donors, strategic partners and directly impacted individuals and their families;
  • Serve as a productive and positive ambassador for the CFSY at a variety of events, meetings, receptions and other external events; and
  • Fulfill other tasks and responsibilities as needed to support a growing organization.



  • Bachelor’s degree preferred, or in place of a degree, 5+ years of work experience in a position that required project creation and management, budget management, critical thinking, and relationship-building with diverse stakeholders;
  • Minimum three years experience in a development role, preferably in nonprofit organizations;
  • Minimum three years experience developing and implementing a range of events (including but not limited to conferences, convenings, high-profile meetings, fundraising dinners, and other special events), including soliciting sponsorships, donations and in-kind contributions;
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively manage and support complex projects and work tasks, with multiple stakeholders, goals, timelines and deadlines
  • Demonstrated ability to think strategically, and set and meet project goals and metrics of success;
  • Experience developing and managing department and/or large project level budgets;
  • Demonstrated understanding of how to work and negotiate with vendors and contractors;
  • Ability to serve as an effective liaison between the CFSY, event planning consultants and others;
  • Extraordinarily organized, detail-oriented and able to multitask;
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills;
  • Demonstrated ability to think outside the box, be creative and negotiate diverse stakeholder preferences and needs; and
  • Experience and high level of comfortability with Google Apps and Microsoft Office; CRM software; email and online marketing software, giving/donation apps, project management software; video conferencing; and webinar software.

Location and Travel:

CFSY’s headquarters are in Washington, DC, with many staff working remotely throughout the country. The scope of the Major Gifts and Events Manager’s work will be national. All CFSY staff based outside of Washington, DC are expected to come to our DC office regularly (approximately every 4-6 weeks for 2-3 days). In addition, occasional travel nationally (approximately 20% of the time) to provide onsite support at events and attend donor meetings is required. All business related travel will be paid for by CFSY in accordance with our travel policy.

Compensation and Benefits:

The salary for this position is $70,000. The CFSY also offers a  generous benefits package, including employer‐paid premiums for a platinum individual health insurance plan, life and disability insurance, an Employee Assistance Program, sabbatical, and a 403(b) retirement plan. This position is full‐time and exempt.
