EPIP LA | The Movement Against Toxic Philanthropy

Working in philanthropy is a privilege. Those of us fortunate to do it have been able to provide essential funding for initiatives that positively impact our communities. Yet the philanthropic sector also faces large challenges. In recent years, we have become more aware of the ways in which private, tax-deductible donations may fund work outside of the public good. We more actively acknowledge and question the white-dominant culture of grantmaking. We are witnessing the public demand accountability from private institutions for the philanthropic funds they accept which may have been earned through ethically questionable means.

We invite you to join us for a critical conversation about our sector and how we can work together to support the rising movement against toxic philanthropy. This event will be interactive and discussion-based. We ask that you read the following articles in preparation and come prepared to engage:
1. "Philanthropy serves the status quo" by Annika Neklason
2. "Jane Meyer discusses her book 'Dark Money' and its ongoing relevance" by Kate Tuttle
3. "'Decolonizing Wealth' addresses philanthropy's white supremacy problem, offers solutions" by Catherine Lizette Gonzalez
4. "Money, ethics, art: Can museums police themselves?" by Holland Cotter
5. "'We didn't cause the crisis': David Sackler pleads his case on the opioid epidemic" by Bethany McClean

Please also bring your recommendations of articles, books, podcasts, etc. that you would like to share with your peers!

This event is now SOLD OUT.  To join the waiting list, please email us.
