EMERGING LEADERS SHOULD ATTEND THE SUMMIT

“In an era in which the number and the variety of nonprofit groups are exploding, and young people are flooding the field, [the] need for community is being shared by many others in [t]his age group… In May 2008, when the Council on Foundations holds its Leadership Summit… it will offer its first full next-generation program. It is being put together by three of the better-known young people’s groups: Emerging Practitioners of Philanthropy, which supports a spectrum of grant-makers; Resource Generation, for young philanthropists who want to change society with their personal wealth; and 21/64, a division of the Andrea and Charles Bronfman Philanthropies.”

You may have heard that “Philanthropy’s Vision: A Leadership Summit” (the Summit) will be different from what the philanthropic community is used to, and you may have questions about your participation. Since you are reading this website, you are interested enough to get your questions answered. Luckily, we’ve have some answers – so keep reading!

If you are a next generation foundation professional, trustee or family member, you may be asking, “Will I feel welcomed at the Summit? Since it may be large, will I find a community to be part of? Will the Summit meet my learning needs?”

If you are a foundation executive or board leader, you may be asking, “Is it important to send the emerging leaders in my organization to this Summit? Will it offer them value that they can bring back to our work? What senior leaders will they be learning from? Is it worth the price tag?”

The answer to these Frequently Asked Questions is this: Yes. Absolutely.

This page will provide you information about The Generational Leadership Program, a cluster of workshops, pre-conferences and side events throughout the Summit designed by and for the next generation. Here you will find an overview of the program, schedule and description of events, information on scholarships, frequently asked questions, and some helpful downloads and links.

OVERVIEW

“Younger professionals may feel in the minority and left out at the large conference, but being able to connect with colleagues in a space that is just for them is perfect.”

– Emerging Leaders Salon Participant, COF 2007 Annual Conference

Planning Partners:

Designed through an innovative partnership between the Council on Foundations, 21/64, Emerging Practitioners in Philanthropy, and Resource Generation, The Generational Leadership Program is a track of workshops, pre-conference and side-events aimed at serving emerging philanthropic professional, family members and trustees. Packed with innovative learning, skills-building and networking activities for and about the next generation, The Generational Leadership Program will be woven throughout Philanthropy’s Vision: A Leadership Summit. “Next generation” or “emerging” leaders are individuals from Generation X (born after 1965), and the Millennial Generation (born after 1980), or individuals with less than five years experience in the philanthropic field.

Individuals from every generation and career level contribute valuable insights and experiences in understanding the next generation of philanthropy. Foundation board and family members, executives and staff members can take the opportunity to learn from and engage with emerging philanthropic leaders at The Generational Leadership Program.

The Generational Leadership Program will provide an exciting opportunity for a large and diverse delegation of next generation participants to gain skills and ideas to benefit them professionally; engage in inter-generational dialogue with senior colleagues; and build community. The Program will offer concrete skills and ideas to help participants improve philanthropic practices within their organizations and to address generational issues in the field.

This is an unprecedented opportunity to advance the personal and professional development of both emerging and seasoned leaders in your foundation. Foundations are encouraged to bring their emerging leaders to experience The Generational Leadership Program and the entire Summit.

Multi-Generational Family Philanthropy
WEDNESDAY, MAY 7, 10:00AM-11:30AM
Link to Session Description on Summit Site

Ten years ago, the “transfer of wealth” research unleashed a conversation in the philanthropic realm about preparing and engaging the next generation for their imminent roles in stewarding philanthropic dollars. Ten years later, multiple generations are involved in family philanthropy and learning to work together around decision-making tables. This interactive session will illuminate the stories of family members involved in various forms of multi-generational philanthropic activities, engage session participants in a conversation about cross-generational collaboration, and offer strategies for participants to explore back home.

Millennials and the Moment
WEDNESDAY, MAY 7, 10:00AM-11:30AM
Link to Session Description on Summit Site

We are at a historic moment where youth activists are changing the face of politics and influencing social change movements. With a unique social consciousness and world view shaped by events such as the September 11th terrorist attacks and Hurricane Katrina, the Millennials — individuals born between 1980–1995 — are using innovative technologies, social networking opportunities, and new models of collaboration to get out the vote, get on the political agenda, and influence change. In this session, you will hear from inspiring young leaders who will discuss how they are developing projects that incorporate elements of civic engagement, activism, and movement-building.

Generations in the Nonprofit Workforce: A Critical Opportunity for the Funding Community

WEDNESDAY, MAY 7, 2:00PM-5:00PM

Link to Session Description on Summit Site

The verdict is in. Generational change in the nonprofit sector is happening. The Greatest Generation is establishing its legacy; the Baby Boom is struggling with questions of retirement and ongoing engagement; Generation X is taking strides in defining its leadership role; and the Millennial Generation is entering the workforce in a significant way. At this critical moment, the support system for nonprofit talent – everything from recruitment through retirement – remains under-developed and under-resourced. This Advanced Practice Institute will explore the roles that funders can take in addressing these urgent generational and workforce issues. An extraordinary group of funders, researchers, and practitioners will share their experiences and engage you in conversation using a highly interactive format.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Download Frequently Asked Questions in a Word Document

:: Emerging Leaders May Ask:

Q: “Will I feel welcomed at the Summit?”

A: The Council on Foundations, along with 21/64, Emerging Practitioners in Philanthropy and Resource Generation, welcome emerging and next generation leaders to the Summit. We will make sure that you will be well-oriented, connect with a community of your peers, and learn from senior leaders in our field as well as your peers. From Sunday, May 4 through Wednesday May 7, we will offer customize learning and community-building activities to emerging leaders every day and evening of the Summit.

Q: “Since the Summit may be large, will I find a community to be part of?”

A: While the Summit may be filled with a wide array of participants and programming, it will not be a “mega-conference” like some people have called it. The Summit has been designed so that you can be part of smaller communities within the larger conference (such as family philanthropy or community foundations). The Generational Leadership Program will offer a community for next generation participants – including the opportunity to connect with peers during pre-conferences, the EPIP Next Generation Lounge (an informal gathering space within Resource Central, the physical hub of the conference), and a Next Generation Hosted Suite for evening socializing and semi-formal discussions.

Q: “Will the Summit meet my learning needs?”

A: The Summit will offer an array of educational and training opportunities examining the themes of leadership, partnership and impact in philanthropy. The Summit will be a unique opportunity to learn across the boundaries of our field. For the first time, the community foundations, family philanthropy, and the rest of the field will meet together, breaking the silos of the funding sector. It will also take a view of philanthropy that is both local and global, introducing you to colleagues from your community and from around the world. The Summit will also offer concrete skills-building opportunities. The Generational Leadership Program will add to this mix a slate of sessions focused on the generational issues impacting you, your organization, and your grantees. On top of this, we will provide unique, top-quality peer and inter-generational dialogue planned by and for next generation leaders.

:: CEOs, Board Chairs & Senior Leaders May Ask:

Q: “Is it important to send the young people in my organization to this Summit?”

A:
Yes, the leadership of the Council on Foundations and the Summit planners strongly encourage CEOs, senior executives and board leaders to invest in emerging leaders by sending them to the Summit to participate in The Generational Leadership Program and all the other dynamic learning opportunities of this unique conference.

Q: “Will the Summit offer emerging leaders real value that they can bring back to our work?”

A:
The Council and its partners have invested resources to ensure that emerging leaders are able to attend and get real value from the Summit. By attending the Summit and the Generational Leadership Program, emerging leaders will be exposed to both concrete and conceptual grantmaking ideas, hard and soft skills, peer and inter-generational learning, and they come into contact with local and global colleagues. They will have much to bring back to the daily work of your organization.

Q: “What senior leaders will the emerging leaders learn from at the Generational Leadership Program?

A:
The Emerging Leader Salons will offer emerging leaders the rare chance for seminar-style dialogues with three of our field’s preeminent leaders Susan Berresford (Retired President, Ford Foundation), Julie Rogers (CEO, Meyer Foundation), and Sherece West (CEO, Winthrop Rockefeller Foundation). In addition, esteemed colleagues such as Summit Co-Chair Luz Vega-Marquis (CEO, Marguirite Casey Foundation) and Kathleen Merchant (CEO, Community Foundation of Greater Cinncinnati) will join emerging leaders as presenters throughout the relatedconcurrent sessions.

Q: “How can I afford to send my emerging leaders to the Summit?”

A:
Investing in your emerging leaders by sending them to this unique convening will offer your organization a critical talent management advantage; boost morale; help emerging leaders to find a peer community; and bring your organization new knowledge and contacts. The Council on Foundations and Emerging Practitioners in Philanthropy look to partner with you in this process by offering the Next Generation Scholarship Fund, which will supplement your costs by covering the cost of registration for emerging leaders.
