Strategic Communications Project Intern (AF)

Organizational Description

The Astraea Lesbian Foundation for Justice is the only philanthropic organization working exclusively to advance LGBTQI human rights around the globe. We support brilliant and brave grantee partners in the U.S. and internationally who challenge oppression and seed change. We work for racial, economic, social, and gender justice because we all deserve to live our lives freely, without fear, and with dignity.

The first grantmaker to hundreds of organizations, Astraea plays a catalytic role for LGBTQI organizations across the globe. Our grantee partners pursue strategies ranging from arts and cultural activism to international human rights advocacy and work on a diversity of issues such as trans human rights, LGBTQ immigrant rights and freedom from violence.

Strategic Communications Project Internship

The intern will work closely with Astraea team members in New York and Kenya to contribute to our support of grassroots LGBTQI groups through research, grantmaking, training and accompaniment. This specific project aims to strengthen the capacity of Kenyan LGBTQI activists to make social change, or as some call it, to “change hearts and minds” in their respective communities and contexts. Through partnerships with social science and communications experts, LGBTQI activists will gain a deeper understanding of the mindset of the audiences they aim to shift and gain tools to integrate research into impactful and culturally-relevant communications. The intern will learn about Astraea’s history and values, our progressive grantmaking model and LGBTQI, feminist and social justice movements. More specifically, the intern will learn about and gain skills related to project planning and management, research-based approaches to strategic communications, grants administration and management, and monitoring and evaluation processes and tools.

The intern will support the planning and implementation of Kenya-based convenings and provide assistance on other project tasks, including:

  • Assist with due diligence, procurement, tracking and processing payments;
  • Track and organize information for project monitoring, analysis and reporting;
  • Support grants administration to grantee partners in Kenya, India and the Dominican Republic;
  • Other project-related tasks as needed.

Time Commitment

Internships have a minimum commitment of 4 months, ideally May through August 2017. Arrangements can be made to work up to 20 hours per week. The position may be extended for one additional semester upon mutual agreement of the intern and Astraea.

Compensation

$11/Hour
