The Schultz Family Foundation, established in 1996 by Howard and Sheri Schultz, creates pathways of opportunity for populations facing barriers to success. By investing in innovative solutions and partnerships we aim to help unlock people’s potential and in doing so, strengthen our businesses, our communities, and our nation. We focus our efforts on two groups with enormous promise: the 5.6 million young adults who are out of school and out of work and the 3.6 million post-9/11 veterans transitioning to civilian life now and in the next few years. Millions of post-9/11 veterans are returning to civilian life with diverse skills and tremendous potential but many lack opportunities to connect to meaningful jobs, get the health resources they need, and become leaders in their home communities. Through our nationwide Onward Veterans initiative, the Foundation empowers post-9/11 veterans and their families in their transition to civilian life. We focus on investing in research and treatment of post-traumatic stress and traumatic brain injury, enhancing and accelerating employment opportunities through innovative training and career placement programs, and facilitating access to services for veterans and their families. To further these efforts, we work to ensure that the civilian population increasingly understands the strengths and talents of our veterans, and the contributions they can make when they return home.
With unemployment among young adults at a rate that’s twice the national average, too many young people are disconnected from the training, tools, and education they need to enter the job market. We believe that young people who are out of work and school yet show untapped potential are the “opportunity youth” of this generation; they have the willingness and talent to improve their own lives and make a positive impact on the lives of others. Through our Onward Youth initiative, the Foundation helps close the opportunity gap for young people by leveraging unique partnerships and investing in clear pathways to employment, service and civic engagement, and tailored supports. We also work to stimulate conversations among business leaders, philanthropists, and those who support young people every day to ensure that their potential can be realized for us all.
The Program Officer will be responsible for building and managing a portfolio of grant investments designed to support returning veterans and their families in their transition to civilian life though strategic investments in wellness, job training placement and retention, and community supports. This position will advance the Foundation’s strategy focused on the wellness levers that address the “invisible” wounds of returning post 9/11 veterans. Through stakeholder engagement and coalition building, s/he will work closely with the program team to implement the Veterans Services grant strategy for the foundation. The program officer will be a self-starter who is inspired by the mission of the Foundation and the opportunity to work in an open, collaborative culture.
- Onward Veterans Portfolio. This position will support the Senior Onward Veteran Program Officer on the Onward Veterans Portfolio and utilize domain expertise to identify and engage thought leaders, technical experts, and consultants to support strategy and grant development as well as prospect and research potential investment opportunities and partnerships. Represent the foundation and portfolio at conferences and events and prepare materials, prose and power point synthesis and recommendations on program issues, strategies, and other relevant topics.
- Portfolio Management. Review analyze and evaluate grantee proposals, prepare recommendations for funding. Work with prospective grantees to develop proposal submissions, budgets and implementation plans. Develop grant agreements with clearly defined outcomes and milestones. Analyze and assist in the development and evaluation of program strategies. Manage portfolio of grants, grantee relationships, grant progress and expenditures, and review grantee status reports.
- Foundation Operations. Assist with the development of operational infrastructure such as, foundation process and improvement, and facilitation of agreements with consultants and other external vendors.
- Contribute to and manage special projects, as requested.
- Minimum of a B.A., graduate degree in related field preferred
- Familiarity with Military and Veterans Services, and the social, behavioral and mental health issues military service personnel face upon returning to civilian life. This includes an understanding of the diverse range of modalities to support behavioral and mental wellness (e.g., innovative research, model programs, conventional or unconventional therapies, recreational therapy)
- Demonstrated understanding of public and private funding streams for veterans and their families
- Proven ability to anticipate next steps, take initiative, apply sound judgment, problem-solve, meet deadlines, work independently as well as a member of the team
- Demonstrated experience as a strategic thinker paired with strong analytic skills and the ability to synthesize information
- Excellent interpersonal, written and oral communication skills and the ability to communicate with diverse audiences
- Experience setting goals and objectives, prioritizing and structuring action plans and work activities
- Experience establishing organizational systems to improve efficiency and functioning in a changing environment
- Proficiency with Microsoft Word, Outlook, Excel, One Note, PowerPoint and SharePoint
- Passion, humility, integrity, positive attitude, collaborative, mission-driven, and self-directed.
- Ability to travel
LOCATION & COMPENSATION
Position is based in Seattle, Washington and will occasionally require travel. Salary will be competitive and commensurate with experience.
