October 2008 - EPIP Announces Sophia Silao as Associate Director
Emerging Practitioners in Philanthropy (EPIP) is pleased to announce that we have appointed Sophia Silao as Associate Director, effective October 27. Please join us in welcoming her!
Ms. Silao is a thoughtful, serious, and experienced next generation leader in the philanthropic community. She brings ten years of experience working in two different foundation settings - The North Star Fund and, prior to that, The New York Women's Foundation, both innovative public grantmaking foundations. I’ve included more information about her experience below.
Many of you already know Sophia. She was one of the first awardees selected by EPIP’s conference scholarship program, the Professional Development Fund, and twice served as a mentor in the NYC EPIP Mentoring Program. It is worth noting that most of the mentors in the program were foundations CEOs and senior level executives; Sophia stood out as a successful mentor to her peers.
Most importantly, Silao brings to our national team a strong work ethic; a keen ability to listen and pose critical questions; a passion for social justice, leadership development and philanthropy; and a sense of humor.
The Associate Director position is a central part of our effort to increase capacity to strengthen the next generation of grantmakers by enhancing services to our members, chapters, supporters and other stakeholders. This role is a full-time, senior-level position with a portfolio of responsibilities including membership development, chapter support, fundraising, communications, and operations.
You can help us kick-off Sophia’s tenure and EPIP’s capacity-building efforts. If you have been participating in the EPIP community but have not become a dues-paying member or have not renewed your members, I urge you to look into the possibility of your organizing becoming an Institutional Member of EPIP, or taking it upon yourself to join as an Individual Member. You or your organization can join today by clicking here to fill out our online membership form. If you want to support our efforts in another way, I invite you to make a donation to EPIP today. Checks can be made out to New World Foundation, our fiscal sponsor (you can write EPIP in the memo) and mailed to my attention at 666 West End Avenue, Suite 1B, New York, NY 10025.
This new position was created thanks to the generous financial support of The Lumina Foundation for Education and The W.K. Kellogg Foundation. Additionally, I wish to acknowledge our other major funding partners: Ford Foundation, Charles Stewart Mott Foundation, and Annie E. Casey Foundation.
During a national search managed by CommonGood Careers, we received nearly 200 applications, with eight amazingly strong finalists moving to the interview stage. I wish to recognize Katie Pakenham and her colleagues at CommonGood Careers, who managed this heavy load with grace and ease. Thanks also to Monique Mehta and James Weinberg who provided Board leadership during the search process.
Emerging Practitioners in Philanthropy is the national association led by and for the next generation of grantmakers. Our mission is to strengthen the next generation of grantmakers, in order to advance effective social justice philanthropy. Our members are professionals and trustees at a variety of foundations, corporate giving programs, and other philanthropic entities. EPIP currently has over 200 individual and institutional members and chapters in eight communities across the United States.

Mar 08 - EPIP Announces New Board Members Monique Mehta and James Weinberg
Monique Mehta is Executive Director of the Third Wave Foundation. Third Wave is a feminist, activist foundation that works nationally to support young women and transgender youth ages 15 to 30. Through strategic grantmaking, leadership development, and philanthropic advocacy, the Foundation supports groups and individuals working towards gender, racial, economic, and social justice.
Prior to Third Wave, Monique was Development Director for Sakhi for South Asian Women, through the New Voices Fellowship program. While in law school, Monique worked with Andolan: Organizing Low-Wage Immigrant Workers, Sanctuary for Families, UNIFEM, and the Immigrant Defense Project (NY State Defender’s Office). She has mainly focused on grassroots work around immigrant issues, violence against women, human trafficking, and organizing low-wage workers. Monique received her J.D. from Brooklyn Law School and B.A. from Colgate University. In 2007, she received the National Women’s History Project “Generations of Women Moving History Forward” award.
Monique says: "I am really impressed with EPIP’s work to bring more emerging leaders to the COF Summit, and believe this is a launching off point for EPIP to have a greater impact within philanthropy... I believe EPIP could forge stronge alliances in order to engage in greater collective philanthropic advocacy. I am excited for EPIP to be a storehouse of knowledge around social justice philanthropy for a new generation of leaders as well as a stronger advocate for shifting where resources go and how new donors engage with giving."
James Weinberg is Founder and CEO of CommonGood Careers, a national nonprofit search firm dedicated to supporting social entrepreneurs with their hiring needs at every organizational level, providing resources for socially driven jobseekers, and addressing talent-related issues throughout the sector. As a nonprofit practitioner himself, James recognized the need for nonprofits and jobseekers to receive more direct support in connecting with each other.
Previously, James served as National Development Director at BELL (Building Educated Leaders for Life). Prior to this, James served as the Executive Director of the Homeless Children’s Education Fund, where he worked to ensure that children who are homeless have equal access to the same educational opportunities and experiences as their peers. James has a master’s degree in Management & Public Policy from Carnegie Mellon University, is an alumnus of the Coro Fellows Graduate Program in Public Affairs, and holds a bachelor’s degree in Psychology from Tufts University.
James says: I have been inspired by EPIP’s mission and impressed by its work ever since my first meeting with Rusty Stahl over a year and half ago. My connection to the organization’s work stems both from my personal theories of social change, as well as from
my current efforts to address next-generation leadership issues through the nonprofit sector. Today’s nonprofits face larger responsibilities, challenges and opportunities than ever before. In order to remain competitive and sustainable, organizations must continue to evolve in the face of changing realities, often at rates that force them to make difficult decisions and prioritizations. Within this environment, philanthropic leaders are uniquely positioned to serve as both
catalysts and shepherds of change; that is, if they are sufficiently educated, motivated and empowered to do so. That is why I believe that EPIP represents such a powerful lever for moving the nonprofit sector forward."
