The Next Generation of Investing

We’re committed to investing in the change we want to see in the world. Are you?

Can the financial system offer access to clean water in the slums of Mumbai? Can we use our investments to provide sustainable infrastructure for Native American lands? Support affordable housing to be built in the inner city? Strengthen our public education system?

How can we, the Next Generation, catalyze our investments to nourish, not exploit, our global community and ecosystem?  Only 5% of most foundations’ and individuals’ assets are actually gifted away each year, leaving the rest sitting in the bank – how can we utilize that 95% for social change, too? These are the questions that motivate and inspire participants in the Next Generation Fellowship in Mission-Related Investing (MRI).

The Next Gen Fellowship Program is a one-year intensive peer-to-peer learning program for trustees and individual donors seeking to align their philanthropic mission with the management of their assets. The 2012 cohort will work together to answer the following question:

How can the next generation of donors influence the 95% of assets in philanthropic endowments and their personal resources for social change?

Cohort participants meet monthly by phone and for two in person retreats to:

  • Clarify their personal values around the management of their assets;
  • Increase their financial literacy in order to make informed investment decisions;
  • Learn about the unique investment vehicles available to foundations and donors seeking to make a social impact through investing; and
  • Build a community of young leaders who can articulate the importance of mission related and socially responsible investing in informed and powerful ways.

The Next Gen Fellowship in Mission Related Investing is a partnership between Confluence Philanthropy and Resource Generation. The 2012 cohort begins in September 2012. Application deadline extended to May 28th!

Participation in the Fellowship costs between $2,000 and $5,000, to cover the cost of the over 70 hours of programming provided. We ask that if you are able, you pay at the higher end of the sliding scale so that people who have less access to money can pay on the lower end and costs will still be covered.

If you are a member of either RG or Confluence, you can deduct $100  from your chosen registration fee. If you are a member of both organizations, reduce it by $150! If you have any questions or cost would be a barrier for your participation, be in touch with jessie@resourcegeneration.org.
